English around us

A world of words

Bookmaker at Aintree

“A person who accepts and pays out amounts of money risked on a particular result, especially of horse races.”

People in the UK and Ireland usually bet on all sorts of things… but this time many of them felt outraged when the Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has offered odds on the outcome of the Oscar Pistorius trial, the South African athlete who has pleaded not guilty to intentionally killing his girlfriend.

An online petition criticising the promotion has gone viral receiving almost 100,000 signatures. The petition claims that making money from the trial is “vile” and “offensive”. (BBC News)
