English around us

A world of words

Drone

drone

  • A type of aircraft that does not have a pilot but is controlled by someone on theground.
  • A male bee.
  • A low continuous noise that does not change its note.

Drones – or unmanned aerial vehicles -are playing an increasingly important role in air warfare and air support. They  are mainly used for surveillance but could also use weapons .They are used in situations where manned flight is considered too risky or difficult.

But their growing use is becoming increasingly controversial, and protesters all over the world have marched in USA and UK for calls for new rules on drone surveillance. They fear drones make it easier for politicians to launch military interventions, and increase the possibility of civilian casualties.
