English around us

A world of words

A poem is a piece of writing in which the words are arranged in separate lines, often ending in rhyme, and are chosen for their sound and for the images and ideas they suggest.

Today 21 March is World Poetry Day, a day declared by UNESCO to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements”.

Although some countries still keep a previous date in October or even November, the purpose is the same: to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

  • Do you like reading and listening to poetry?
  • Do you have a favourite poem?
  • Would you like someone to write you a poem?
  • Do you know any English or American poets?
  • Do you think English is a better language for poems?
  • Read the following quotations about what poetry is and choose the one you like most.
