English around us

A world of words

Gizmo

  • Any small device.
  • A gadget, especially one whose name the speaker does not know or cannot recall.

This gizmo is one of the peculiar utensils that have come out of the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Its aim is helping you eat slowly, literally giving you a little vibrating jolt if you are eating too fast. Advertised as a way of losing weight and feeling great, it gives you loads of information about the lenght of your meals, your stats and performance.( HAPIfork)

  • Would you use this utensil? Do you find it useful?
  • Are there any disadvantages?
  • Are we becoming too dependent on technology?

What do the following quotes mean? Which do you like most? Do you agree?

  • Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense. Gertrude Stein
  • If it keeps up, man will atrophy all his limbs but the push-button finger. Frank Lloyd Wright
  • Technology… is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other. Carrie P. Snow
