English around us

A world of words

  • KindnessThe quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. (Oxford Dictionary)
  • The act of going out of your way to be nice to someone or show a person you care, something that apparently does not exist in this world anymore. (Urban Dictionary)
  • ‘Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear, and the blind can see.’ Mark Twain

Kinder children are more popular” is the conclusion of a recent study led by the University of California.

The pre-teen children were asked to carry out three random acts of kindness every week for a month to see what effect it would have on their lives. After the four weeks, children were happier and more liked by their classmates.

As part of the experiment, the students circled the name of those classmates they would like to work with at school. The results showed that the students in the kindness group were significantly more nominated, suggesting that schools could help to combat bullying by “reinforcing social connections between children in this simple way,” explained the lead researcher.

“The most interesting finding to me is that a simple positive activity can promote positive relationships among peers,”(BBC)

In your opinion, why does kindness matter? How does it feel when you show some kindness?
