English around us

A world of words

Chessboxing is  a mixture of chess and boxing – one round of chess is followed by a round of boxing and so on until the winner is declared by knockout, checkmate or points victory.

The sport was invented by Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh, who was inspired by a French comic Le Froid Equateur by artist Enki Bilal. Despite the obvious differences between both activities, tactical thinking, stamina and quickfire responses are vital for both sports.

Chessboxing is a fast growing craze in London and Berlin, where most events take place.
