A world of words
“Driverless cars will soon be a reality on the roads of US after the state of Nevada approved America’s first self-driven vehicle licence.
The first will be a Toyota Prius modified by Google, which is leading the way in driverless car technology. The car uses video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser to “see” other traffic.
More than 1.2 million people across the world die every year in road crashes, and as many as 50 million more are injured, according to the World Health Organization, but Google’s car adheres strictly to the speed limit and follows the rules of the road. Analysts predict that in the future, autonomous cars will be able to communicate with one another, allowing them to negotiate lane changes and overtaking”. ( BBC News)
Sebastian Thrun, who helped build this car, is the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab and is working, through robotics, to change the way we understand the world.
