English around us

A world of words

In important financial newspapers we have recently seen a lot of acronyms , abbreviations consisting of the first letters of each word in the name of something, pronounced as a word, to define groups of countries.

For example,  the BRICS  (Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa), considered emerging economies, celebrated their last summit in Sanya to discuss how to get more involved in global affairs.

Then, the  EAGLES, the CIVETS, coined by different institutions;  and, lately, the  CARBS (Canada, Australia, Russia, Brazil and SouthAfrica), countries which  have between 25 and 50 percent of world natural resources.

There is also an offensive acronym, the  PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, and since 2008 spelled with another I that stands for Ireland) , which has been banned by news and economic organisations after the denunciation made by Portugal.

As to the future, let’s think positively and invent our own unique acronym using this mind map.For example, Anabel: Awesome, Nice,  Alert, Brave, Energetic, Listener.
